映画祭について　About this movie festival

国際交流員をはじめとする大分県内在住の各国出身者が、自国の映画を紹介・案内するというユニークな国際映画祭を、竹田市で開催します。今回は、アメリ カ、イギリス、韓国、ニュージーランドとフランスの５カ国の方々が、それぞれ厳選した母国の映画を、日本語字幕で上映します。まず、鑑賞前に、映画の 背景にあるそれぞれの国の歴史、文化、政治や社会事情などを、出身者ならではの視点で解説、また、鑑賞後は感想や意見交換を通して、異文化交流を身近に体 験することができます。

映画はそれぞれの国の現代文化の一部であると同時に、その国を映す鏡でもあります。また、映像や、ストーリーの中にそれぞれの国特有の身体言語、恋愛関係、価値観等が細やかに描かれています。まさに、それは異文化を学び感じることのできる最高のツールといえるでしょう。

上映に加え、開催地の中心となる温泉地・長湯についてのご案内も提供いたします。それぞれの開演の合間などを利用して、ぜひ竹田市の誇る日本一の炭酸泉や飲食店をごゆっくりお楽しみ下さい。

On the Weekend from June 13th to 14th, current and former JET participants will present the International Movie Festival, in the lovely Nagayu onsen (spa) area of Naoiri town, in Taketa. Six presenters from France, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Korea and the USA will introduce and briefly discuss a movie from their home country. The movies will be shown in their original language with Japanese subtitles; the entrance is FREE .
What makes this event unique is the opportunity to discuss the movie afterwards and exchange opinions with representatives of different cultures. For those who do not have the endurance to watch three movies in a row, the famous onsen area of Nagayu, where the festival will be held, offers a broad variety of relaxation and culinary pleasures for regaining your strength to give it another shot.

「マンハッタン物語」のロバート・マリガン監督が、ピュリッツァー賞受賞のベストセラー小説「ものまね鳥を殺すには」を完全映画化した社会派ドラ マの名作。主演は「ローマの休日」のグレゴリー・ペック。この作品でアカデミー主演男優賞を受賞。1930年代、人種差別の残るアメリカ南部の田舎町で、 黒人の容疑者を弁護することになった弁護士のアティカス。差別と闘いながら、正義を貫こうとする男の姿を描く感動作。

In a small Alabama town in 1932, Atticus Finch, a widowed lawyer, strives to create for his two little children, Scout and brother, Jem, an atmosphere free from hatred and prejudice. Finch puts his career on the line when he agrees to represent Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. Many of the townspeople try to get Atticus to pull out of the trial, but he decides to go ahead. The trial and the events surrounding it are seen through the eyes of his daughter Scout, who now must defend herself against the taunts of their classmates.

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD won Academy Awards for Best Actor (Peck), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction.

救世主イエス・キリストの偉大な生涯をパロディ化した風刺映画で“モンティ・パイソン”シリーズの第四弾。

西暦33年のエルサレム。イエス・キリストと同じ日に生まれたユダヤ人の青年ブライアンは、ひょんなことから民衆に救世主だと勘違いされてしまう。救世主 であることを必死で否定するブライアン。しかし、どんどん信者は増える一方。おまけにローマ帝国にも危険人物のレッテルを貼られ終われる身に・・・。

『ライフ・オブ・ブライアン』は基本的に古典的な笑劇であるが、様々な評価を受け、偽善的行為と宗教的狂信を含んだ喧騒としての組織された宗教への痛烈な批判とも、また「検閲されるに値する」宗教への冒涜だとも言われた。

初めはイギリスで公開されたが、いくつかのイギリスの町と様々な国では公開が禁止された。しかし、この映画を見たい人は公開が禁止されていない町に行ったため、このことは有効な手段とはいえなかった。

Brian is born in a stable on Christmas, right next to You Know Who. The wise men appear and begin to distribute gifts. The star moves further, so they take it all back and move on. This is how Brian’s life goes. The Jews are looking for a release from the Romans, Spiritual and political decay, keep looking for signs and a group decides Brian is the Messiah. He cannot convince them he is not. He joins the Peoples’ Front of Judea, one of several dozen separatist groups who actually do nothing, but really hate the Romans. While not about Jesus, it is about those who hadn’t time, or interest to listen to his message. Many political and social comments.

“Still has its rude, rowdy sting — and it still speaks more truth about religion than nearly all serious movies on the subject.”

1915年、フランス・パリの貧しい家庭に生まれたエディット・ジョヴァンナ・ガション。母は路上で歌を歌い、日銭を稼ぐ毎日だった。その後、祖母が経営する娼館に預けられた彼女は、娼婦ティティーヌたちに可愛がられ束の間の安らぎを得る。やがて兵役から戻った父に引き取られると、路上で大道芸をする父の手伝いをする中で、自らも人前で歌うことを覚えるのだった。そして1935年、路上で歌を歌い日銭を稼いでいた彼女は、パリ市内の名門クラブのオーナー、ルイ・ルプレにスカウトされ大きな転機を迎えた。ルプレによってピアフと名付けられた彼女は、歌手としてデビューするや、瞬く間にスターダムへと駆け上っていくのだったが…。

A swirling, impressionistic portrait of an artist who regretted nothing, writer-director Olivier Dahan’s La Vie en Rose stars Marion Cotillard in a blazing performance as the legendary French icon Edith Piaf. From the mean streets of the Belleville district of Paris to the dazzling limelight of New York’s most famous concert halls, Piaf’s life was a constant battle to sing and survive, to live and love. Raised in her grandmother’s brothel, Piaf was discovered in 1935 by nightclub owner Louis Leplee, who persuaded her to sing despite her extreme nervousness. Piaf became one of France’s immortal icons, her voice one of the indelible signatures of the 20th Century.

解決

一時的に母のもとを離れ、田舎の祖母の家で暮らすことになった少年と祖母の交流を綴った感動ドラマ。都会育ちで反抗的な少年とどこまでも寛容で愛情溢れる 老婆が、心を通わせ絆を深めていく過程を、叙情豊かにかつノスタルジックに描く。監督・脚本は「美術館の隣の動物園」のイ・ジョンヒャン。出演者は少年サ ンウ役のユ・スンホ以外はすべて素人で、映画の舞台でもあるおばあちゃんが住む村の住民が起用されているという。
サンウは母親と２人でソウルに 暮らす７歳の少年。夏のある日、サンウは失業中の母が新しい仕事を見つけるまでの間、今まで会ったこともない田舎のおばあちゃんの家へ預けられることにな る。だが都会暮らしに慣れてしまっているサンウにとって、田舎の生活はあまりにも退屈だった。その上、おばあちゃんは話すことも読み書きも出来ないため、 サンウは彼女をバカにし、何かと不満をぶちまける始末。それでもおばあちゃんは、サンウを叱ることはなく彼の願いを叶えてあげようと懸命だった。サンウは そんなおばあちゃんに、徐々に心を開き始めるのだが…。

More accustomed to the luxuries of the modern world, a spoiled seven-year old boy must stay with his old-fashioned grandmother in a small rural village while his mother looks for work. At first Sang-woo rudely rejects his grandmother’s way of life. But gradually, through her constant show of kindness and love, he learns to accept and understand the simple pleasures of nature and her lifestyle. Sang-woo leaves the village a different boy.

THE WAY HOME tells the touching story of two people as they overcome their differences in an effort to find a bond of understanding. The silent and patient grandmother, a creature of nature and solitude, finally reaches her grandson from the material world, by quietly and constantly offering him unconditional love.

解説

1947年、銀行員として成功していたアンディは、妻とその愛人を射殺したという身に覚えのない罪で終身刑2回という判決を受け、ショーシャンク刑務所に投獄される。刑務所が持つ異質な雰囲気に初めは戸惑い孤立するアンディであったが、決して希望は捨てず、明日の自由を信じ続ける。

そんな中「調達屋」と呼ばれ服役囚たちから慕われていた囚人、”レッド”と出会い、鉱石を砕くハンマーや、スター達のポスターなど様々な物を調達してもらううち、少しずつ2人の交流が深まっていく。アンディは元銀行員の経歴を如何なく発揮し、刑務所内の環境改善に取り組む事でレッドや他囚人からの信頼を高めていく。さらには刑務官たちからも一目置かれるようになり、彼らの税務処理を請け負うことになるが、アンディにはある考えがあった。その後、年老いたレッドは数十年の服役ののち仮釈放されたものの、社会に順応できずにいた。仮釈放後間もなく自殺してしまった老人・ブルックスとまったく同じような状況に追い詰められるが、ふとアンディとの約束を思い出す。

In 1946, a banker named Andy Dufresne is convicted of a double murder, even though he stubbornly proclaims his innocence. He’s sentenced to a life term at the Shawshank State Prison in Maine, where another lifer, Ellis “Red” Redding, picks him as the new recruit most likely to crack under the pressure. The ugly realities of prison life are quickly introduced to Andy. But he does not crack: he has the hope of the truly innocent, which allow him to prevail behind bars. He uses his banking skills to win favor with the warden and the guards, doing the books for Norton’s illegal business schemes and keeping an eye on the investments of most of the prison staff. In exchange, he is able to improve the prison library and bring some dignity and respect back to many of the inmates, including Red.

解決

夫を亡くしたエイダは、幼い娘と一台のピアノと共に見知らぬ男のもとへと嫁いでゆく。口がきけない彼女にとってピアノは言葉であり、全てだった。しかし夫は重くて運べないピアノを海辺に置き去りにし、粗野な男ベインズの土地と交換してしまう。打ちひしがれたエイダにベインズは、レッスン一回につき黒鍵をひとつずつ返すと約束をする。はじめは彼に嫌悪感を示していたエイダだったが、ベインズとの“レッスン”は次第にエスカレートしてき、甘く官能的な調べが響きはじめる…。

19世紀半ばのニュージーランドを舞台に、言葉をピアノに託したひとりの女性の激しい愛の物語。劇中でピアノソロの演奏もこなしたホリー・ハンターがアカデミー、カンヌ両方の主演女優賞を獲得。女性監督ジェーン・カンピオンによる骨太の演出、マイケル・ナイマンの音楽も加わって世界中に衝撃を与えた名作。子役のアンナ・パキンも11歳でアカデミー賞助演女優賞を受賞した。

It tells a story of love and fierce pride, and places it on a bleak New Zealand coast where people live rudely in the rain and mud, struggling to maintain the appearance of the European society they’ve left behind. It is a story of shyness, repression and loneliness; of a woman who will not speak and a man who cannot listen, and of a willful little girl who causes mischief and pretends she didn’t mean to.

It is one of those rare movies that is not just about a story, or some characters, but about a whole universe of feeling – of how people can be shut off from each other, lonely and afraid, about how help can come from unexpected sources, and about how you’ll never know if you never ask.
